​Skimming

Masters of Plaster are very skilled at plaster skimming, and will be happy to advise you as to whether skimming, or full plastering is the best option for your project.

​What is skimming ? It’s the application of a fine, thin layer of plaster, over the existing finish, to create a silky smooth, mirror-like topcoat. It can be applied to dry boards too, when fixed onto walls and ceilings, which can make a job much quicker than needing to prepare walls from scratch. 

Prior to skimming, the existing finish must be carefully prepared. This can be a painstaking job. Loose or crumbling material must be removed, and brickwork must be washed. This stage of the job is very important, and will have an enormous impact on the finished result. If it is neglected, the final skim will be disappointing. 

Interestingly, Skim can be applied directly onto paintwork, however it must be in good condition. If it is flaking or cracked, it must be rubbed down until it can provide a good base. Preparation is always key.

The skimming layer is usually 2-3mm thick, so will cover most minor surface imperfections. Any larger defects will need to be corrected during the preparation phase. 

Skimming requires tremendous skill to achieve a smooth finish. Its not something that can be learned form a YouTube video. Its easy enough to get the skim onto the wall. But after that, many years of practice are required to get that mirror-like finish. The skim will be what you see, when your walls or ceiling are painted, so its important not to settle for second best.
